7. Software Installation - Initial and Update (v.5.x)

We assume that you have been configuring all machines using the Hardware Guidelines we have listed in the previous chapters, and that you have followed the recommendations given by the video device vendors regarding the installation of their hardware. Verify this with the following checklist:

  1. The operating system is configured properly.

  2. The hardware is installed/connected properly.

  3. The required video device drivers have been installed, configured and tested.

  4. The network configuration has been done properly.

The installation provides a fully functional demo of our playout applications and the final output will display a watermark. You have to acquire a license to disable the watermark. Please → contact us directly.

macOS Gatekeeper/Security & Privacy

Before the installation can start, it may be necessary to disable Apple's macOS Gatekeeper temporarily.  When opening one of the playout applications for the first time, it will be verified by the operating system. Usually, this process is handled rapidly. If the verification process is stalled, please follow the steps below:

When using macOS Monterey (12.7.x):

  1. Open the Apple Terminal application.

  2. Enter "sudo spctl --master-disable" (without quotes) and press the Enter key.

  3. You will be asked for the admin password. Enter it and press the Enter key.

  4. Quit the Apple Terminal application.

  5. Open the System Preferences application.

  6. Click on “Security & Privacy”.

  7. Authorise yourself to Unlock the pane.

  8. At the bottom of the “General” tab, select “Apps Store and identified developers” (see below).

  9. Close the System Preferences and open the Just Playout applications.

  10. You may revert the setting after that using “sudo spctl --master-enable” (without quotes).

When using macOS Ventura (13.6.x) or macOS Sonoma (14.x):

  1. Open the Apple Terminal application.

  2. Enter "sudo spctl --master-disable" (without quotes) and press the Enter key.

  3. You will be asked for the admin password. Enter it and press the Enter key.

  4. Quit the Apple Terminal application.

  5. Open the System Settings application.

  6. Click on “Security & Privacy”.

  7. Authorise yourself to Unlock the pane.

  8. Verify that the “App Store and identified developers” option is selected.

Installation

If you should do an upgrade, please also read the end of this chapter called Installing a new Version over an existing Version.

Refer to https://toolsonair.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/TST/pages/3580592749 or https://toolsonair.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/TST/pages/3580592354/just+live+v.5+Getting+Started for the installation process.

Optional: Install the Template Package which adds a basic set of Realtime Graphics Templates.

Never install the Composition Builder application (our realtime graphics template creation tool) on the machine running Just Out. Run Composition Builder on another available Mac. Starting Composition Builder on such a machine may terminate a running playout!

Installation when using a distributed Playout

You can install and run the Playout from a single machine, or use multiple machines to run a distributed Playout. Refer to Chapter https://toolsonair.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/TST/pages/3580594239for details on how to set up a distributed Playout.

Installing a new Version over an existing Version

Basically, a new installation and updating an older version works the same. But there are a few things you maybe would like to keep in mind when updating to a new version.

1. Preparations

  1. Make a backup of the current installation. The best would be a full backup of the startup disk to another disk. Otherwise, use the backup functionality of Just Connect (https://toolsonair.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/TST/pages/3580595532) or copy the Channel folder which can be found at “/Library/Application Support/ToolsOnAir/Just Connect” to another storage device.

  2. Make sure you have a valid activation code for the new version. Please → contact us if you do not have a valid activation code.

  3. Download the new playout software version as well as the latest Video device driver and all other driver updates you may need during the installation.

2. Stop the Current Playout

  1. In case you have a redundant playout, switch the failover hardware to the redundant engine.

  2. Quit all ToolsOnAir playout applications (on this particular Mac) that are related to the Channel you would like to update, or Deactivate Stay Alive in case it is activated.

Quitting a Just Out engine will stop the current playout.

In case you stop a channel with a redundant engine defined - using the Just Control configuration window - only the main engine will be stopped, and the redundant engine will remain on air.

In case you stop a channel which has the Automated Failover Control option activated - using the Just Control configuration window - only the main engine will be stopped, failover switches to the redundant engine, and the redundant engine will remain on air.

3. Update the Operating System and the Video Device Drivers

Playout of realtime GFX templates can fail, due to a bug in macOS Sonoma. Because of this we recommend all customers using an INTEL-based Mac and realtime GFX to stay with macOS 13.6.x Ventura until Apple solves the issue.

  1. Check which OS version is recommended for the new playout software version from the installer. With version 5.0 we generally support macOS Monterey or higher, which you can download from Apple's App Store.

  2. If you currently run macOS Monterey (12.7.x), go to the “Apple” menu, select “System Preferences” and click on “Software Updates”. On macOS Ventura (13.6.x) or macOS Sonoma (14.x), go to the “Apple” menu, select “System Settings”, and click on “General → Software Update”.

  3. Make sure to install all available updates for your software until there are no updates left.

  4. Uninstall the current version using the AJA/BMD Uninstall Application and restart the Mac.

  5. Install the latest Video device driver version and all other drivers you may have to update.

  6. Restart the Mac and make sure the Firmware of your Video device is the latest version available.

4. Update the ToolsOnAir Software Versions

  1. Extract the downloaded Playout Software and open the disk image (.dmg).

  2. Quit all running playout applications or deactivate “Stay Alive” in case it is activated.

  3. Drag and drop the Just Playout folder onto the Applications folder, as described above.

  4. While copying, click on “Replace” if you get a warning that a folder already exists.

  5. Delete those applications from the Just Playout folder, which you do not need on the particular machine.

  6. Repeat steps 1–4 on all machines running ToolsOnAir Playout software related to the updated Channel.

5. Activate the New Version

  1. Once the new version has finished copying, start Just Connect and Just Control.

  2. Follow the instructions in Chapter https://toolsonair.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/TST/pages/3580595741  to activate the new version.

  3. If required, restart Just Connect

6. Start the Playout

  1. In case you would like to use “Stay Alive”, start all Playout applications using “Stay Alive”.

  2. Otherwise, start all Playout applications (Just Out, Just Connect, and Just Control) that are related to the updated version on this particular machine.

  3. In case you are asked to update the System, agree to do so.

7. Switch to the Primary Playout and Update the Redundant Engine

  1. If you are running the Automated Failover Control option, the Failover should automatically switch to the Primary Engine after a few seconds.

  2. If you are running another failover solution, switch the failover hardware to the Primary Engine.

  3. Repeat points 3, 4, and 6 also on the machine running the Redundant engine.
