Capture Presets define the output format of a Recording (codec, container, resolution, audio channels, etc.). Before you can start Recordings with Just Control, you have to create one or multiple Capture Presets. After defining Capture Presets you can quickly access them in the Just Control inspector. This speeds up the Recording process and helps keeping things organized.

To make any changes within the Just Control Configuration Panel, you have to unlock the panel first.

Overview

Open the Just Control Configuration Panel, select a Device and switch to the “Capture Presets” Tab.

  1. Capture Preset List: shows all available Capture Presets. Use the buttons below to add and remove Capture Presets. Double-click on a Capture Preset Name to adjust the Preset Name.

  2. Capture Preset Configuration Options: Set options for a Capture Preset.

  • TV Norm: select the TV Norm.

  • Container: select the Container.

  • Aspect Ratio: select the Aspect Ratio.

  • Codec: select the Codec. After selecting the Codec you may be asked for the Frame rate and Resolution as well.

  • Audio Channels: select the number of Audio Channels. After selecting the Audio Channels you may be asked for the Audio Track Alignment (Mono or Stereo) as well.

  • Audio Mapping: use this option to change the audio output mapping for the recorded files.

  • Do not write captions to container: enable this options to not write closed caption data into the recorded file.

Add a Capture Preset

In the Device & Channel List select a Device. Click on the Capture Presets tab and press the Plus ("+") button to add a new Preset.

A new window appears, where you have to enter the Name of the new Capture Preset. Press the “Create” button to go back to the Preset option.

Next configure the new Capture Preset. It will be saved automatically after all options are set.

Capture Preset options can be changed at any time.

Edit an existing Capture Preset

Select an existing Capture Preset and change the options on the right side. The changes will be saved automatically.

Remove a Capture Preset

Select an existing Capture Preset and use the Minus ("-")-Button below the Capture Preset list to remove the selected Capture Preset.

Apple ProRes & Avid DNxHD/HR

When creating an Apple ProRes or Avid DNxHD/HR based Capture Preset you have to select the Frame rate and Resolution, after selecting the codec option.

Audio Channels and Audio Track Alignment

You can choose between 2, 4, 8 and 16 Audio Channels for Capture Presets. Some configurations may require an Audio Track Alignment setting as well.

Please note, that some codec/container options allow only 2, 4 or 8 Audio channels as options.

Audio Mapping

The Audio Mapping feature enables the possibility to adjust the output mapping for the recorded video files of the incoming audio channels in a very simple way.

You can set an Audio Output Track to “Silence” as well, if needed.

H.264 Settings

When creating a H.264 Capture Preset you have to select “H.264” specific settings.

Note that “Custom” has to be selected as TV-Norm, when working with H.264 presets.

There are different values and settings that can be customised within a H.264 Capture preset. Initially the container type can be selected. There are two options available:

  • AVFoundation QuickTime

  • MP4

H.264 is a very complex standard and sometimes it is very difficult to work with this codec and its settings. Therefore just:in mac provides various options, which can be modified within a H.264 preset. After choosing the container type you have to define two general settings:

  • Resolution

  • Frame rate

Next you have to select the H.264 profile. Here you can choose between multiple encoder profile options. Then you can set the Bitrate in bit/s, B-Frames, the GOP-Size and the Entropy Mode.

Please be aware that some Mac Models have a built-in H.264 hardware encoder, which just:in mac can use for the H.264 encoding process. This happens automatically, when working with an H.264 Capture Preset. If you are using a Mac without such an H.264 encoder, you will see a warning message in the Errors and Warnings Section within the Inspector.

Please note that not all custom resolutions are supported by the macOS built-in hardware encoder.

Growing Files

just:in mac supports growing files (for macOS and Windows based NLE) with various formats. If you have specific needs or questions, please do not hesitate to contact us. When you are working with Adobe Premiere, please check this Adobe Knowledge-base article as well.

DaVinci Resolve

When using BMD DaVinci Resolve working with growing files is possible as well, but only when using a direct attached storage. Tests with network attached storages showed inconsistent behaviour and therefore it is not recommended. Please do not hesitate to contact us, to get more information or to discuss your recording and editing workflow.
