[JIL] Capture Presets v.6.1

Capture Presets define the output format of a Recording (codec, container, resolution, audio channels, etc.). Before you can start Recordings with Just Control, you need to create one or multiple Capture Presets. After defining the Capture Preset(s), you can quickly access them in the Just Control Inspector. This accelerates the recording process and helps to keep things organised.

To perform any changes within the Just Control Configuration panel, you have to unlock the panel first.

Overview

Open the Just Control Configuration panel, select a Device, and switch to the “Capture Presets” tab.

  1. Capture Preset List: shows all available Capture Presets. Use the buttons below to add and remove Capture Presets. Double-click on a Capture Preset Name to adjust the Preset Name.

  2. Capture Preset Configuration Options: Set the required options for a Capture Preset:

  • “TV Norm”: select the TV Norm.

  • “Container”: select the Container.

  • “Aspect Ratio”: select the Aspect Ratio.

  • “Codec”: select the Codec. After selecting the Codec, you may be asked for the Frame rate and Resolution as well.

  • “Audio Channels”: select the number of Audio Channels. After selecting the Audio Channels, you may be asked for the Audio Track Alignment (Mono or Stereo) as well.

  • “Burnt-in-timecode”: enable this setting to burn in the given timecode to the recorded files.

  • “Audio Mapping”: use this option to change the audio output mapping for the recorded files.

  • “Overlay logo”: with this option, it is possible to overlay a logo/image on the video of the recorded video files.

  • “Do not write captions to container”: enable this option if you would rather not write closed caption data into the recorded file.

  • “MOV Writing”: Choose between “Classic” and “Segmented” here. The “Classic” option is recommended for most use cases, for instance when working with growing files in Adobe Premiere Pro. The “Segmented” option is ideal when working with growing files in just:play & just:live.

Add a Capture Preset

In the “Device & Channel List” select a Device. Click on the “Capture Presets” tab and press the Plus ("+") button to add a new Preset.

A new window appears, where you have to enter the Name of the new “Capture Preset”. Press the “Create” button to go back to the Preset option.

Next, configure the new “Capture Preset”. It will be saved automatically after all options have been set.

Capture Preset options can be changed at any time.

Edit an existing Capture Preset

Select an existing Capture Preset and change the options on the right side. The changes will be saved automatically.

Remove a Capture Preset

Select an existing Capture Preset and use the Minus ("-”) button below the Capture Preset list to remove the selected Capture Preset.

Apple ProRes & Avid DNxHD/HR

When creating an Apple ProRes or Avid DNxHD/HR-based Capture Preset, you need to select the Frame rate and Resolution, after selecting the related codec option.

Audio Channels and Audio Track Alignment

You can choose between “2”, “4”, “8” and “16” Audio Channels for “Capture Presets”. Some configurations may require an Audio Track Alignment setting as well.

Please note, that some codec/container options allow only “2”, “4” or “8” Audio channels as options.

Audio Mapping

The “Audio Mapping” option enables the possibility to adjust the output mapping for the recorded video files of the incoming audio channels in a simple way.

H.264 Settings

When creating an H.264 Capture Preset, you have to select “H.264” specific settings.

There are different values and settings that can be customised within an “H.264 Capture” preset. Initially, the container type can be selected. There are two options available:

  • AVFoundation QuickTime

  • MP4

  • MPEG TS

H.264 is a complex codec standard and is a bit more tedious to set up. Therefore, just:in linux provides various options, that can be modified within an “H.264 preset”. After choosing the container type, you have to define two general settings:

  • Resolution

  • Frame rate

Next, select the aimed “H.264 profile” and choose between multiple encoder profile options. You can also select predefined custom ones, such as “Cantemo” or” iconik Proxy”. Finally, you can set the “Speed” and the “Bitrate in bit/s” options.

Burnt-in-timecode

With this feature selected, it is possible to burn the current timecode into the recorded video files. You can adjust the size (“Timecode Size”) and the position (“Vertical (Y) offset from bottom”) of the burnt-in-timecode.

Overlay logo

The Logo Overlay feature can be used for adding an image or logo on top of the recorded video files. This feature works similarly to the burnt-in timecode option and can be enabled for any Capture Preset.

Image Path: here you have to enter the path to the image/logo on the just:in linux server.

  • Top Position: pixels from the top of the video file.

  • Left Position: pixels from the left of the video file.

  • Opacity: choose a value between 0 and 1 (0.5 for instance).

Growing Files

just:in linux supports growing files (for macOS and Windows-based NLEs) with various formats. If you have specific needs or questions, please do not hesitate to contact us. When working with Adobe Premiere Pro, please check this Adobe Knowledge-base article.

When working with Blackmagic Design’s DaVinci Resolve, please consult the DaVinci documentation about Growing Files as well as the “Supported Formats and Codecs” PDF file, which can be downloaded from the Blackmagic Design homepage (URL may change over time): https://documents.blackmagicdesign.com/SupportNotes/DaVinci_Resolve_18_Supported_Codec_List.pdf?_v=1677744010000
