Settings
Channel Name
Edit the Channel name by double-clicking on the Channel Name label within the “Devices & Channel” list.
Input Mode
Here you can select the Input Mode of the Channel. Available options are:
SDI (Blackmagic Design)
SDI (AJA)
SDI (AJA 4x4K-Quad)
SDI (AJA 4K-2SI)
SDI (AJA 12G)
SDI (AJA 4x8K-Quad)
SDI (AJA 8K-2SI)
HDMI (AJA)
Device
When the just:in linux appliance is running with multiple Video Devices, you can select the specific Video Device here. Normally, the just:in linux appliance is configured to run with one video device only.
Input
Choose the Video Device Input here (Input #1 - Input #8).
Serial
Serial Number of AJA Device
Video Mode
Select the Video Mode here and ensure that a stable incoming signal is available.
Audio Input
Select the Audio Input for this Channel. By default, the option “Auto” is selected and with this option, the same input as for video one is used. By selecting “SDI” you can pick between the available physical SDI inputs as audio input options for this Channel.
Audio Input option “SDI”: When using this option, it is possible to distribute the incoming audio of SDI Input1 to all other Channels. Please note that the incoming video streams have to be synced correctly before. We recommend using Frame Stores for such a recording workflows.
Please note that there is a special use case when using a just:in linux (JIL-8) server appliance. In this case, you have to use Inputs 1&5 to distribute the incoming audio to all other channels, as this is unfortunately a peculiarity of the AJA video device.
File Overwrite Strategy
Append Counter (Default): When using this option, the Just In Engine application will add “_2” to the actual file name to avoid overwriting an already existing file.
Replace: By choosing this option, the Just In Engine application will overwrite a file with the same name at the target location.
Chunk Length
Defines the maximum length of the recorded Video. The maximum Chunk Length is 12 hours (12:00:00:00). The maximum is 12:00:00:00. The default option is 2 hours (02:00:00:00).
Enable VDCP Control on TCP Port
Setting to enable VDCP Control for dedicated Port.
Channel Port
This is the port to access the Channel from the Just Control client over an IP connection.
File Buffer Queue
The Buffer Queue defines the caching of the encoded frames before they get written to the storage destination(s). This queue size sets the limit for the “Storage too slow” error message as well. So when this queue is getting full, you will see an error within Just Control’s Channel Viewer Window, and it is an indication of I/O speed problems with the storage.
Lowest value: 16 MB = 16777216 Bytes
Highest value: 4 GB = 4294967295 Bytes
Default value: 1024 MB = 1073741824 Bytes
File Buffer Size
Number of Bytes (in binary) that will be written to the destination at once (Default: 4 MB).
4 MB = 4194304 Bytes (default setting)
8 MB = 8388608 Bytes
10 MB = 10485760 Bytes
50 MB = 52428800 Bytes
56 MB = 58720256 Bytes
128 MB = 134217728 Bytes
256 MB = 268435456 Bytes
512 MB = 536870912 Bytes
1000 MB = 1048576000 Bytes
1024 MB = 1073741824 Bytes
Please note that you can overwrite this Channel setting for every Main Path of a Destination Preset.
Video Encoder Threads
With the Video Encoder Threads setting, you can adjust the number of CPU cores the Channel will use for the encoding process. This setting has been expressly designed for multichannel UHD recording scenarios. Please refrain from changing this setting without first consulting a TOA Support engineer.
Enable RP188 (SDI Embedded) Timecode
Default state: Enabled
When disabled, SDI Embedded as Timecode Source will not work. This setting can improve the internal transfer rate from the video device to the encoding service. Especially in cases, where the application reports Frame drops this setting can be useful.

AJA Frame Buffer
This setting adjusts the internal Frame Buffer of each individual AJA input source. This setting was designed to improve the stability and performance of UHD recording workflows. Please consult a ToolsOnAir Support engineer, before changing this setting.
On Color Space Change
The “On Color Space Change” setting can be used to define the action in case of a colour space change of the incoming signal while recording. By default, this is set to stop the Recording, but it can be adjusted to start recording into a new file. Generally, there shouldn’t be a change in the incoming colour space information while recording, but in case there is, this setting can be used to adjust the Channel’s behaviour.
Please note that just:in linux keeps writing to an MXF, MP4 or MPEG TS container in case of a colour space change while recording, even if the option “New Container” is selected, as this is supported by the MXF container format.
Restart On No Signal if Not Recording
This option is enabled by default, when using an AJA Video Device and cannot be turned off. This setting ensures that the Channel gets restarted automatically, if there is a signal loss while the Channel is in Idle mode (i.e. not recording).
Signal Loss while Recording Options
Furthermore, you can define what should happen, if there is a signal loss is detected while recording. The following options are available in this particular situation:
“Close container, write to new”: the recording container(s) will be closed and as soon as a valid incoming signal is detected again, the Channel resumes the Recording into a new file.
Close container and stop: the recording container(s) will be closed, and the channel stops recording.
Write black frames: Black video frames will be added to the recording container(s), while there is no signal. The Recording continues.
Duplicate last valid frame: The last valid video frame will be duplicated to the recording container(s), while there is no signal. The Recording continues.
CPU Affinity, Capture Thread and Write Thread
CPU Affinity
This setting can be used to pin the Channel to specific CPUs, to gain performance improvements.
Capture Thread
The Capture Thread setting defines a specific CPU core for loading the video frames from the AJA capture device to the OS. This setting is important for cases, where the Channel has been dropping frames.
Write Thread
The Write Thread setting is similar to the Capture Thread setting and is used for setting a specific CPU core for handling the I/O process (i.e. writing to the storage destination(s)).
Preview Settings
These settings are related to the Video Preview of the Channel.
Resolution: two resolution options are available:
High: 640×360px
Low: 480×270px
Frame rate: the preview frame rate can be changed between “0” (=native frame rate) and 30 (if the channel frame rate is higher than “30”, then the preview will be limited to 30 fps).
Quality: the “Preview Quality” setting can be changed between “10%” and “100%” (the default value is “50%”).
UHD Channel Input Modes
As mentioned in previous chapters, just:in linux is capable of working with different UHD Channel Input Modes. This page will focus on the configuration of such Channels and how to use them.
AJA 4x4K-Quad
The following two UHD Channel Input Modes are working with 3G-SDI infrastructures:
AJA 4x4K-Quad
AJA 4K-2SI
Both Channel Input Modes are supported by just:in linux. To set up one or multiple Channels in this way, open the Just Control Configuration panel in Just Control and verify that all available SDI Input Channels are unchecked so that the settings can be adjusted.
Select Channel SDI 1 and SDI (AJA 4x4K-Quad) as Input Mode, then select a UHD Video Mode, such as 2160p50.
Note that the Input setting is arranged to “Input #1” in this case. This is very critical, as in this particular Input Mode, four (4) physical SDI Inputs will be used to create the Channel (Inputs 1-4 will be used for Channel 1 and Inputs 5-8 will be used for Channel 2). Next, enable Channels SDI 1 and SDI 5 and revert to the main Just Control user interface by closing the Just Control Configuration window.
AJA 4K-2SI
In the same way (as above) you can set up Channels in AJA 4K-2SI Channel Input Mode. Please remember that this Input Mode uses four 3G-SDI Inputs for one Channel as well.
AJA 12G
With the SDI (AJA 12G) Channel Input Mode a single 12G-SDI Input can be used for a single Channel. This Channel Input Mode works the same way as with HD Channels.
