General Notes
Before upgrading to v3.x of our playout applications, please be aware of the following changes.
A new activation code is needed to use v3 of just:live and just:play.
MacPro5,1 is not supported anymore and v3 is the last version which support MacMini6,x and MacMini7,x.
Using a video device from BMD under macOS Catalina (10.15.x) on Intel-based Mac's, you MUST run just:out and just:control on separate machines, otherwise audio dropouts will occur while generating the Poster Frames or while working on Finder level.
There are “What’s new” documents available for v3.1 and v3.5 which describe the additional features available, but also the hardware and macOS versions which can be used with those versions.
Customers using Teamviewer to access the Mac running just:out
Using Teamviewer to access a machine running just:out, make sure you have the following settings deactivated in the Preferences of the Teamviewer client (the machine you use to connect to the machine running just:out).
Failing to do so will switch the audio output away from the video device the same time you connect to the machine running just:out using Teamviewer.
macOS Catalina and Intel based Macs only
At the time we did the final tests for version 3, there was no driver available from AJA which supports macOS Big Sur and therefore also not the Apple Silicon based mac minis.
Because most of our customers use hardware from AJA, we recommend to use macOS Catalina and an Intel mac with v3.0.
Support for macOS Big Sur and M1 based Mac's will follow as soon as possible with a future release.
v2.x Features which are not available with v3.x
In v3.x some features are not available which have been available in previous versions. Some of those features may be available again in future releases, others had to be removed permanently.

Codecs and Container Formats which are not available with v3.x
Due to macOS changes we can not support legacy codecs and container formats anymore. If you rely on these codecs, please keep using v2.7 (or a previous versions) and contact us, or they can be added to the system by installing Apple's Pro Video Formats. Please see here for more information about Codecs and Containers 2.4 Supported Video Containers & Video Codecs (v3.0) and how to install support for additional Containers and Codecs using the Apple Pro Video Formats.
Container Formats not available anymore: .3gp, .avi, .dv, .f4v, .mkv, .mpegts
Codecs not available anymore: Apple Animation (.mov)
Using v2.7 (or older) Channels in v3
We have tested updating existing channels to v3 extensively, but unfortunately we cannot test every possible combination. Because of this we strongly recommend backing up existing channel(s) using the backup feature of just:connect (-> Advanced Settings) or by copying the channel from Library/Application Support/ ToolsOnAir/Just Connect to an external storage.
Renamed User Interface Application
With v3 we changed the naming of the User Interface from just:live and just:play to "Just Control". This is a unified interface for all ingest and playout applications from TOA. Which playout interface is opened for a certain channel is defined in the channel settings, and different kinds of channels can be used in the same interface.
For Customers Updating from previous versions to v3.x
All customers upgrading from a previous version need a new v3.x activation code to be able to play out using just:out without a watermark.
Starting with version v1.8 the activation is no longer done on the machine running just:out, but on the machine running just:connect. This means that all customers with a valid maintenance contract who would like to update to v3.x from a version older than v1.8.x should contact ToolsOnAir at orders@toolsonair.com to make sure the new license key will be made using the right machine ID.
For Customers using the Event Option
Event devices are migrated as part of the channel file from v2 to v3 as long as they are available under v3. Crosspoints can not be taken over and have to be added manually.
Please → contact ToolsOnAir in case you have any questions regarding Events.
Poster Frames in v3
Poster Frames in v3 are generated uncompressed in contrast to previous versions, where the Poster Frames have been generated using a compressed format. Because of this, generating the Poster Frames is much faster in v3, but they are also taking more space compared to previous versions. Make sure to save them on a fast and big storage which is not the same storage you use as the repository of your movies. The internal SSD or another fast internal disk is perfect for storing the Poster Frames.
For Customers with more than 5000 Video files in a single Folder
Starting with version 2.5, we will generate an .xml sidecar file for every movie which is stored in one of the repository folders. Because of this, scrolling in the Library of the user interface can take slightly longer compared to previous versions until all sidecar files are generated. Once this has been done, the speed of the Library will be much faster compared to v.2.x or older. In case a movie is added/removed or changed, the content of the whole folder has to be scanned to update the Library. During our tests we have seen, that this can take a few seconds in case there are more than 5000 files in a folder. Because of this we recommend to limit the amount of movies which are saved in a single folder to not more than 5000 files.
