Supported Container formats and Codecs

The Just Out Playout Engine supports following codecs and containers without installing any additional codecs:

ContainerCodecs
.movDVC, DVCPro, H264, ProRes (except RAW(HQ), some MPEG-2 compressions
.mp4
.m4vH264
.mpg and .mpegseveral MPEG-2 compressions

After installing the Apple Pro Codecs, the following codecs and containers are supported in addition:

ContainerCodecs
.movDVCProHD, HDV, ProRes RAW(HQ, Uncompressed
.dvDV, DV25
.mxfAVC-Intra, DNxHD/HR, IMX, XDCam EX/HD/HD422
  • If you need alpha we recommend to use Apple's ProRes 4444 codec.
  • After installing the Apple Pro Codecs there are also some other codecs and container supported which we haven't supported before and which we haven't tested so far, like XAVC and XF-AVC/HEVC.

Codecs Missing Warning

In case the Apple Pro Codecs can not be found when you start Just In, Just Out or Just Control, a warning will be shown. Click Install to open the Link to the Apple download page mentioned also under Video Codec Acquisition. Make sure to install the codecs also on all machines running Just Control, as Just Control uses them to preview the movies.

macOS - Codecs Location

If you do not see any Codec Bundles at this location at the Engine machine, then this macOS machine has no Pro Video Codecs installed:

/Library/Video/Professional\ Video\ Workflow\ Plug-Ins/

Video Codec Acquisition

Due to licensing restrictions we are not allowed to ship any codecs along with our products.

To obtain the appropriate professional Apple codecs you need to install the Free Apple ProVideoFormats from here: https://support.apple.com/kb/DL2050?locale=en_US. Run Apple's Software Update after the installation and download/update the latest versions of the codecs.

Features

  • Mixing Videos with different pixel sizes in the same Playlist.
  • Mixing all supported codecs in the same Playlist.
  • Mixing Videos with different aspect ratios in the same Playlist.
  • The field order will be inverted automatically if needed. This can be overridden per clip with the Invert Fields function in the Inspector.
  • When removing frames using QuickTime Player you need to export the Video as a new file after that.

Limitations

  • Not all functions coming with a certain container or codec can be used.
  • You cannot play Videos created with more than one codec. Make sure that all Videos are created using a single codec.

Using MXF Videos

  • Just Out and Just Control duo NOT provide the technology to play out MXF wrapped Videos and the Apple Pro Codecs have to be installed on all machines running Just Out or Just Control. You also have to install the Apple Pro Codecs on your Mac's, in case you would like to preview MXF videos in the operating system or the QT10 Player.
  • Due to the way MXF works, it can take several seconds to open an MXF Video, depending on its length and the number of Audio tracks coming with the Video. This implies that the readout of metadata in the Library of the just:live/just:play user interface as well as adding such a Video to the rundown will not happen instantly (as opposed to other containers).
  • No labels
