Starting with version 4.0, Just Control communicates with the macOS Calendar application and therefore the application must have access to the macOS Calendar application. Upon its first launch, Just Control requests access to the macOS Calendar application.

If Calendar acces access hasn't been granted, follow these steps to enable Calendar access:

  1. Open the macOS “System PreferencesPreferences”.

  2. Go to the Security & PrivacyPrivacy” preference pane

  3. Switch to the Privacythe “Privacy” tab.

  4. Look for Just Control and make sure it can access Calendarsthat accessing Calendars is enabled.

Preface

In Schedule Mode a Channel records files based on Calendar Events from the macOS Calendar application of the machine running Just Control. After configuring a Channel in the Just Control Configuration Panel, a Calendar with the Channel's name will be added to the macOS Calendar application automatically. You may also use any other Calendar which can be added to the macOS Calendar app, like such as iCloud or Gmail Accounts or from other Mail/Calendar servers. Events scheduled in the corresponding Calendar will automatically switch the Channel to Schedule Mode and start a Recording. When stopping a Scheduled Schedule Recording manually, the corresponding Event will be deleted automatically.

...

Warning

When working in Schedule Mode make sure that Just Control is running at all timetimes. New Events or changes to existing Events can only be received when just:control Just Control is open and connected to the appropriate channel.

...

Open Just Control and select a Channel. Switch the Channel Mode to Schedule Schedule” and select the appropriate Calendar from the Calendar selection box at the very top.

...

Open the macOS Calendar application and select the desired Calendar for this Channel. Add Events to the Calendar (the max. duration of an Event is 12 hours).

...

The Events will show up in the Inspector of Just Control. Each Event will result in one Recording.

...

Info

It is possible to add Events back to back without loosing any frames.

...

There are three custom Calendar Event Variables which that can be used to make simplify the naming process of the scheduled events easier:

  • <Channel> will be replaced with the actual Channel Name of the Channel.

  • <Date> will be replaced substituted with the actual date of the current recording.

  • <Time> will be replaced substituted with the actual start recording time of the current recording.

...

Date & Time Format

Info

Please be ware beware that the Date and Time Format changes within the System Preferences are only possible with macOS Monterey or with earlier macOS versions. Starting with macOS Ventura this is not no longer possible any longer. When using macOS Ventura, please use the following Terminal commands to adjust the Date and Time formats:

Date:

defaults write -g AppleICUDateFormatStrings -dict 4 "ddMMyyyy"

Time:

defaults write -g AppleICUTimeFormatStrings -dict 4 "HHmm"

Adjust the format part according to your needs and restart Just Control.

Please be aware note that you can not cannot change the Date format within the Language & Region Pref Pane ” preference pane within the System Preference Settings…Pane, as you this will override the custom Date and Time settings with this step again applied above (macOS Ventura only).

...

Changing the format of these Calendar Event Variables is very easy and straightforward as well. In order to To make this as flexible as possible, we are using the default system settings for that purpose. To change that, open the custom format settings for “Dates” and “Times”, which can be found here:

  1. Open the macOS System Preferencesand open the “Date & Time” Preferences Panel preference panel (up to macOS Monterey)

  2. Open “Language & Region” Settings settings

  3. Switch to the “Advanced” Settings settings

  4. Change “Dates” and/or “Times” Format Settings settings here ("Full:")

Repeating Calendar Events

Repeating a Calendar Event would result in a file which that gets overwritten every time the same event is executed again. To avoid this, you can add the Variables variables <Channel>, <Date> and <Time> to the Calendar Event. This appends the channel name, date, and time (= beginning of the corresponding Calendar Event) to the Clip Name.

...

It is not possible to use Calendar Events, which that exceed a length of 12 hours. Just Control will truncate the Recording length automatically , if required.

...

Adjustable Event End Time while Recording

The Recording Event End Time can be changed during recording. This is especially useful if you have to make changes during an ongoing recording. Simply adapt the Event End Time in the Calendar application and Just Control will recognise the change.

...

You can manually stop a Scheduled Recording by simply pressing the Record Record” button within the Channel Preview. Doing so will delete the Calendar Event in the macOS Calendar application.

...

The Scheduled Event List only shows the upcoming ten (10) events scheduled in the chosen Schedule Calendar and only if provided that these events are within the next 24 hours. All further events are only visible in the Calendar itself, and they get displayed within just:control Just Control as soon as one of the previous recording events are is finished.

Quit Just Control

Quitting Just Control results in the application no longer receiving updates or new Events. It is necessary to have Just Control open all the time when using Schedule Mode for a Channel.

...

Note

Please beware note that you will see unexpected behaviour after quitting and restarting Just Control, while a channel is currently recording schedule scheduled events in Schedule Mode. If Just Control gets restarted, though, please make sure ensure that you restart the Just In Engine application as well.

Working with shared Calendars in Schedule Mode

As mentioned above, you can also work with shared Calendars (like such as Gmail, iCloud, or any other Mail/Calendar server which can be added to the macOS Calendar application) in Schedule Mode. This enables you to use two ore or more machines for adding recording events to the appropriate Calendar. Just You need to make sure though that the User Interface machine running Just Control has access to the Calendar and that the User Interface Just Control application is running. Then you can use all machines/devices for adding recording events and you are not limited to the User Interface machine anymore.

Warning

Please make sure ensure that you are running one Just Control instance only, when using Schedule Mode and shared Calendars. Working with multiple Just Control instances connected to the same channels running in Schedule Mode can lead to unexpected behaviour and is strictly not recommended.

...

When using the Schedule Mode in just:in (mac and linux), the Timecode Source is an important setting, and therefore it should be chosen correctly to ensure a smooth operation.

In general Generally, all available Timecode Sources can be used for Schedule Mode. System administrators only have need to take care ensure that the just:in engine (mac and linux) gets fed with the same Timecode Source as the macOS machine, where the Scheduling process (Just Control User Interface and macOS Calendar application) is running. For instance, when using a an NTP Server as Source (=Computer Time), then the macOS machine running the Just In Engine application and the machine running the Just Control User Interface have need to have the same NTP server configured (the same also applied applies to just:in linux).

It is also possible to use a an LTC source (AJA Capture Card LTC) for Scheduling , then the LTC generator only needs an NTP option as well and then it will also work correctly, as the engine can get fed via the Timecode In of the video device card and the machine for the User Interface running Just Control can be configured with NTP.
