macOS Gatekeeper/Security & Privacy

Before the installation can start, it may be required necessary to disable Apple's macOS Gatekeeper temporarily.  When opening one of the playout applications for the first time, it will be verified by the operating system. Usually, this process takes up to three minutesis handled rapidly. If the verification should not be possibleprocess is stalled, please follow those stepsthe steps below:

When using macOS Monterey (12.7.x):

  1. Open the Apple Terminal application.

  2. Enter "sudo spctl --master-disable" (without quotes) and press the Enter key.

  3. You will be asked for the admin password. Enter it and press the Enter key.

  4. Close Quit the Apple Terminal application.

  5. Go to Open the System Preferences application.

  6. Click on Security & PrivacyPrivacy”.

  7. Authorise yourself to Unlock the preference pane.

  8. At the bottom of the General General” tab select Allow apps downloaded from Anywhere (versions older than macOS Monterey) or , select “Apps Store and identified developersdevelopers” (see below).

  9. Close the System Preferences and open the Just Playout applications.

  10. You may revert the setting after that using “sudo spctl --master-enable” (without quotes).

When using macOS Ventura (13.6.x), macOS Sonoma (14.6.x) or higher:

  1. Open the Apple Terminal application.

  2. Enter "sudo spctl --master-disable" (without quotes) and press the Enter key.

  3. You will be asked for the admin password. Enter it and press the Enter key.

  4. Quit the Apple Terminal application.

  5. Open the System Settings application.

  6. Click on “Security & Privacy”.

  7. Authorise yourself to Unlock the pane.

  8. Verify that the “App Store and identified developers” option is selected.

Installation

Note

If you should do an upgrade, please also read the end of this chapter called Installing a new Version over an existing Version.

Optional: Install the Template Package which adds a basic set of Realtime Graphics Templates.

Warning

Never install composition:builder the Composition Builder application (our realtime graphics template creation tool) on the machine running Just Out. Run Composition Builder on another available Mac. Starting Composition Builder on such a machine can may terminate a running playout!

You can install and run the Playout from a single machine, or use multiple machines to run a distributed Playout. Refer to chapter Chapter 6. Setup Variants (v.5.x)for details on how to set up a distributed Playout.

  1. Make a backup of the current installation. Best The best would be a full backup of the startup disk to another disk. Otherwise, use the the backup functionality of Just Connect or Connect (12.9 Channel - Advanced Tab (v.5.x)) or copy the Channel folder which can be found at at “/Library/Application Support/ToolsOnAir/Just ConnectConnect” to another storage device.

  2. Make sure you have a valid activation code for the new version. Please → contact us if you do not have a valid activation code.

  3. Download the new TOA playout software version as well as the latest Video device driver and all other driver updates you maybe will may need during the installation.

  1. In case you have a redundant playout, switch the failover hardware to the redundant engine.

  2. Quit all TOA ToolsOnAir playout applications (on this particular Mac) which that are related to the Channel you would like to update, or Deactivate Stay Alive in case it is activated.

Warning

Quitting a Just Out engine will stop the current playout.

In case If you stop a channel Channel with a redundant engine defined - using the Customer Just Control configuration Configuration window - only the main engine will be stopped, and the redundant engine will remain on airON AIR.

In case you stop a channel which has TOA failover the Automated Failover Control option activated - using the Customer Just Control configuration Configuration window - only the main engine will be stopped, failover switches to the redundant engine, and the redundant engine will remain on airON AIR.

3. Update the Operating System and the Video Device Drivers

Warning

Playout of realtime GFX templates may encouter failure, due to an inconsistency in macOS Sonoma. We recommend that all customers who utilize an INTEL-based Mac and realtime GFX continue to utilize macOS 13.6.x Ventura until Apple resolves the issue.

  1. Check which OS version is recommended for the new TOA playout software version from the installer. With version 5.0 we generally support macOS Monterey or higher, which you can download from Apple directly.Otherwise, go to the Apple Menu select System Preferences and there select Software Updates's App Store.

  2. If you currently run macOS Monterey (12.7.x), go to the “Apple” menu, select “System Preferences” and click on “Software Updates”. On macOS Ventura (13.6.x) or macOS Sonoma (14.6.x), go to the “Apple” menu, select “System Settings”, and click on “General → Software Update”.

  3. Make sure to install all available updates for your software until there are no updates left.

  4. Uninstall the current version using the AJA/Blackmagic Design Uninstall Application and restart the Mac.

  5. Install the latest Video device driver version and all other drivers you may have to update.

  6. Restart the Mac and make sure the Firmware of your Video device is the latest version available.

4. Update the ToolsOnAir Software Versions

  1. Extract the downloaded TOA Playout Software and open the disk image (.dmg).

  2. Quit all TOA Application running playout applications or deactivate Stay Alivein case it is activated.

  3. Drag and drop the Just Playout folder onto the Applications folder, like as described above.

  4. While copying, click on Replace in case on “Replace” if you get a warning that a folder already exists.

  5. Delete those applications from the Just Playout folder, which you do not need on the particular machine.

  6. Repeat steps 1–4 on all machines running TOA ToolsOnAir Playout software related to the updated Channel.

5. Activate the New Version

  1. Once the new version has finished copying, start Just Connect and Just Control.

  2. Follow the instructions in chapter Chapter 13.2 Activation (v.5.x)  to activate the new version.

  3. If required, restart Just Connect

  1. In case you would like to use use “Stay AliveAlive”, start all TOA Applications Playout applications using Stay AliveAlive”.

  2. Otherwise, start all TOA ApplicationsPlayout applications (Just Out, Just Connect, and Just Control) which  that are related to the updated version on this particular machine.

  3. In case you are asked to update the System, agree to do so.

7. Switch to the Primary Playout and Update the Redundant Engine

  1. In case you have a TOA If you are running the Automated Failover Control option, the failover Failover should automatically switch to the Primary Engine after a few seconds.

  2. In case If you have are running another failover solution, switch the failover hardware to the Primary Engine.

  3. Repeat points 3, 4, and 6 also on the machine running the Redundant engine.
