7. Software Installation (v2.5)

We assume that you have been configuring all machines using the Hardware Guidelines we have listed in the previous chapters and that you have followed the recommendations given by the Video device vendors regarding the installation of their hardware. Verify this with the following checklist:

  1. The OS is configured properly.
  2. The hardware is installed/connected properly.
  3. The required Video device drivers have been installed, configured and tested.
  4. The network configuration has been done properly.

The installation provides a fully functional demo of just:out and the playout will display a watermark. You have to acquire a licence to disable the watermark. Please → contact us directly.

Gatekeeper

Before installation it may be required to disable Apple's Gatekeeper temporarily.  When opening just:live or just:play for the first time, the applications will be verified by the operating system. Usually this process takes up to three minutes. If the verification should not be possible, please follow those steps:

  1. Open the Terminal application.
  2. Enter "sudo spctl --master-disable" (without quotes) and press the enter key.
  3. You will be asked for the admin password. Enter it and press the enter key.
  4. Close the Terminal application.
  5. Go to the System Preferences.
  6. Click on Security & Privacy.
  7. Unlock the preference pane.
  8. At the bottom of the General tab select Allow apps downloaded from Anywhere.
  9. Close the System Preferences and open just:live or just:play.
  10. You may revert the setting after a first successful launch of just:live and just:play.

Installation from the Disk Image

If you should do an upgrade, please also read the end of this chapter called Installing a new Version over an existing Version.

  1. Download just:live/just:play from our helpdesk and open the downloaded disk image.
  2. Run the TOA System Checker application. Fix any issues before proceeding with the installation.
  3. Drag & drop the Just Play or the Just Live icon onto the Applications folder icon shown in this window.
  4. When using different machines you have to repeat the installation on each machine.

Optional: Install the Template Package which adds a basic set of Realtime Graphics Templates.

Never install composition:builder (our realtime graphics template creation tool) on the machine running just:out. Starting composition:builder (or Quartz Composer) on such a machine can terminate a running playout!

Installing the Components on Different Machines

In this example we assume that the installation takes place on three separate machines. The following shows the components' functions and where they would have to be installed.

For simplicity only just:play is shown in this figure. The procedure is the same for just:live.

The Preview window of just:out is only available when using the Screen mode and not when using an AJA or BMD Video device.

Installing a new Version over an existing Version

Basically a new installation and updating an older version works the same. But there are a few things you maybe would like to keep in mind when updating to a new version.

1. Preparations

  1. Make a backup of the current installation. Best would be a full backup of the startup disk to another disk. Otherwise use the backup functionality of just:connect or copy the Channel folder which can be found at /Library/Application Support/ToolsOnAir/Just Connect to another storage device.
  2. Make sure you have a valid activation code for the new version. Please → contact us if you do not have a valid activation code.
  3. Download the new TOA software version as well as the latest Video device driver and all other driver updates you maybe will need during the installation.

2. Stop the Current Playout

  1. In case you have a redundant playout, switch the failover hardware to the redundant engine.
  2. Quit all TOA applications (just:out, just connect and just:live/just:play) which are related to the Channel you would like to update.

  3. Deactivate Stay Alive in case it is activated.

Quitting an engine will stop the current playout.

3. Update the Operating System and the Video Device Drivers

  1. Check which OS version is recommended for the new TOA software version from the installer. Usually the current version and the previous version of the OS is supported.
  2. Under the Apple Menu select App Store and update the existing Operating System to the latest version or update to a newer version.
  3. Make sure to install all available App Store updates for your software until there are no updates left.
  4. Install the latest Video device driver version and all other drivers you may have to update.
  5. Restart the Mac and make sure the Firmware of your Video device is the latest version available.

4. Update the ToolsOnAir Software Versions

  1. Extract the downloaded TOA Software and open the disk image.
  2. Drag and drop the application(s) you would like to update/install onto the Applications folder, like described above.
  3. While copying click on Replace in case you get a warning that a folder already exists.
  4. Repeat steps 1–3 for all applications you would like to update/install on this machine.
  5. Repeat steps 1–3 on all machines running TOA software related to the updated Channel.

5. Activate the New Version

  1. Once the new version has finished copying, start just:connect first.
  2. Follow the instructions in chapter 13.3 Activation to activate the new version.
  3. If required, restart just:connect.

6. Start the Playout

  1. In case you would like to use Stay Alive, start all TOA Applications using Stay Alive.
  2. Otherwise, start all TOA Applications (just:out, just connect and just:live/just:play) which are related to the updated version on all machines.
  3. In case you are asked to update the System, agree to do so.

7. Switch to the Master Playout and Update the Redundant Engine

  1. In case you have a TOA Failover Control, the failover should automatically switch to the Master Engine after a few seconds.
  2. In case you have another failover solution, switch the failover hardware to the Master Engine.
  3. Repeat points 3, 4 and 6 also on the machine running the redundant engine.
