2.10 Notes About 608 and 708 Closed Captions (v2.0)

Here are some additional informations which should be considered while configuring a server for playout of Closed Captions.

  • We only support devices from AJA for CC playout.
  • To be able to pass through CC data embedded into the live signal, an AJA Kona 4 is needed.
  • CC of the live signal may be on lines 9 through 20. The incoming signal is automatically scanned for caption data.
  • Playing out QT MOV movie files, line-21 burn-in, the CC data track as well as MCC and SCC sidecar files are supported for closed captions.
  • When playing out MXF movie files, sidecar files in both SCC and MCC formats are now supported for closed captions. This includes files written by just:in.
  • When both a sidecar file and QuickTime CC data track are available for a movie, the sidecar file will be used.
  • When both a sidecar file and an XDCAM embedded data track are available for an .MXF wrapped movie, the embedded data will be used. Only sidecar files are supported for all other .mxf wrapped movies.
  • When playing out NTSC HD with closed captions enabled just:out always sends CEA-708 CC packets. For media with CEA-608 CC packets these will be wrapped into CEA-708 CC packets.
  • When playing out NTSC SD with closed captions enabled just:out now always sends CEA-608 CC packets. For media with CEA-708 CC packets these will be wrapped into CEA-608 CC packets whenever possible.
  • Pressing the jump to next it can take some seconds before the captions will be cleared on screen.
  • CEA-608 and CEA-708 closed captions can be added directly to the outgoing RTMP stream. Please verify with your CDN that CC are supported.
  • To allow the AJA device to add VANC data to the outgoing video signal, the checkbox in front of the "VANC" option has to be activated under the Video Setup tab of the AJA Control Panel.
  • Activate the 4K mode of the AJA Kona 4 card and select a "Non DSK" mode in just:connect, to enable the hardware to pass through CC data from the live source.
  • The output of Closed Captions of an UHD/4K channel is not supported at the moment.
