What's New Playout v.2025.1
This document describes all new features which have been added since v.5.x. Please read What’s New Playout v.5.0, 5.1 and 5.5 for more information about previous releases.
General Notes
Version 2025.1 of our playout solutions will support macOS Sonoma (14.7.x) and macOS Sequoia (15.4.x) on Apple silicon-based Mac minis, Mac Studios and Mac Pros.
Please update your drivers to version 17.1.3 or higher if you are using any AJA video devices. Customers using video devices from Blackmagic Design should use driver version 14.5. When using an ATEM device, please update to version 9.5 or higher of the ATEM Switcher Software for improved stability, performance, and compatibility.
Installation Notes
Before installing any ToolsOnAir application for macOS, open the “System Preferences” application and verify that the “Privacy & Security” setting is properly configured, as shown below. If required, you may revert the setting after the installation has succeeded.
Version 2025.1 Changes - just:live & just:play
Support for HTML based graphics: Version 2025.1 of just:live and just:play is set to modernize on-air graphics on macOS, with the support of dynamic HTML Graphics Template Rendering. This new capability seamlessly integrates with leading web-native platforms such as singular.live, Viz Flowics, SPX and others, providing broadcasters and live event producers with greater flexibility and creative control over graphics playout than ever before. This new functionality works alongside the graphics capabilities our customers have relied on since day one—whether it’s a simple station ID overlay or complex, animated multilayer real-time graphics created using our Composition Builder template editing application. Simply copy and paste the Output URL from a supported HTML graphics system into an available Infinite graphics track. Once an input is received, the Just Out engine instantly processes the given Output URL, allowing you to use the related web-based user interface to instantly take graphics on air, create new templates or modify existing ones in real time.
HTTP Rest API: Just Connect now automatically publishes a HTTP REST API, which includes a new /playout/webSocket end-point to upgrade the connection to a webSocket for bidirectional async messaging and notifications. To access the documentation, open a browser to http://localhost:8080/swagger-ui/index.html (or the IP address of the machine running Just Connect instead of “localhost”, or use the button in the device settings in Just Control).
Mixed frame rate support: The restriction on mixing clips with different timebases has been fully lifted, meaning that any video encoded with a “standard” broadcast timebase can be played on any channel. Frames are processed to match the channel’s timebase accordingly. In the Library, clips that do not match the channel’s frame rate are highlighted in yellow to indicate to the operator that a frame conversion will be applied once the clip is scheduled. Additionally, during preview, trimming, and after scheduling in the rundown, the correct duration—based on the channel’s frame rate—will be displayed in the Preview window, the Workbench, and the Inspector.
New Processing Pipeline: The new version 2025.1 introduces an entirely new low-latency processing pipeline, significantly reducing the delay for most finished actions. This means that tasks such as jumping to the next item in just:play, starting, pausing or stopping media in just:live, or changing properties are reflected on-air much more quickly. Additionally, if an input source is too slow—such as when playing a movie from network-attached storage with an insufficient connection—the last valid frame will now be repeated until frames can be provided at the correct frame rate.
Single (Buffered) Live Input method: In this new version, we refactored the buffered switch-to-live method compatible with video devices from AJA and BMD, as well as all supported streaming formats, including NDI, SRT, and UDP. This new method significantly reduces the delay added to the incoming signal when using the Buffered Input method, decreasing it from nearly 3 seconds to less than 12 frames. At the same time, it enhances stability and adds new features, such as the ability to view the incoming live signal in the On Air preview while playing out.
Channel Format related color space and HDR support availability: With version 2025.1, full support has been introduced for Rec.601, Rec.709, and Rec.2020 color spaces, depending on the selected channel output format. Only the valid color spaces for the chosen format are enabled, with the default color space for that format automatically applied. With HDR-capable hardware and a selected UHD 10-bit format, it is now possible to play out in HDR HLG or HDR PQ, thus supporting Rec.2100 as well. This also includes the ability to switch to an HDR HLG/PQ live signal. To ensure optimal SDR-to-HDR and HDR-to-SDR conversion, we have added additional settings that allow you to define the maximum brightness of your movies and adjust how tone mapping is applied.
Improved Audio support of SRT/UDP channels: SRT and UDP live input streams now support multiple audio tracks, with a total of up to 16 audio channels. For example, a stream with 8 stereo audio tracks will result in 16 audio channels for the live input.
Improved NDI® Metadata support: Our macOS-based playout solution enable SCTE-104/35 insertion and Closed Caption (CEA-708) embedding in the final NDI output, ensuring seamless metadata processing.
Improved Errors & Warning handling: We renamed the “Warnings and Errors” section in the Inspector to “Messages”. In addition, there is a new “Error display” option in Just Control’s settings to define, how messages and warnings are displayed in the multi-viewer. The new “Show icon in the lower bar” option shows a small warning icon in the Channel’s lower bar next to the timecode option button when the channel has any messages or warnings. Clicking on the button opens the “Settings” tab within the Inspector to show any messages. Using “Control-Click” will clear any messages for the channel. The “Show icon and status over the viewer” setting shows the “ERRORS” status with warning icons over the channel’s preview, as was the case in previous versions.
New Online License Activation Process: just:live and just:play 2025 introduce the new Online License Activation Process already in use by the just:in mac solution line. One of the biggest benefits of this new online license activation method is its flexibility for multi-location companies. Whether operating across different offices, production sites, or live event locations worldwide, organizations can dynamically allocate their playout licenses as needed, ensuring optimal utilization of resources. Additionally, in the event of unexpected hardware failure, a license can be quickly reassigned to a replacement system, minimizing downtime and keeping critical workflows running—without the need for external support or manual intervention.
With this new approach, just:live and just:play 2025 empower broadcast production professionals with a modern, hassle-free licensing solution that keeps operations agile, secure, and always ready for the next challenge. The process is straightforward, requiring just an internet connection and a valid license key upon the first activation.
