Correct File Handling (just:store v4.0)

Table of Contents

Preface

A client can connect to just:store share points over SMB, AFP, and NFS. As each protocol handles files differently, switching protocols may cause issues. Therefore, it is important to use only specific characters as described below to avoid issues while data changes.

File Naming Conventions

To avoid any problems with deleting files, use only the allowed characters below.

Using characters not mentioned above will lead to issues when switching protocols. If you need to switch from one protocol to another, we do recommend SMB.

Extended Attributes

Using Extended Attributes is only possible for macOS clients and requires the Macs to use the same system language.

macOS clients have the option to use Extended Attributes, allowing you to easily find or mark files and get more information about the content of the data.

Comments

By opening the info panel (cmd + I) on a folder or file you can add a comment, as shown in the screenshot below. The comment info can be read by all other clients automatically, as it is written into the file.

Tags

By opening the info panel (cmd + I) on a folder or file you can add color tags, as shown in the screenshot below. You can use the default tags or create custom color tags. The color tags' names have to be the same on every client, so we strongly recommend using the same system language on the macOS clients, and also making sure that the custom tag names are the same. The color tag info can be read by all other clients automatically, as it is written into the file.
