The number of channels that qualified Apple hardware can record depends on the format, framerate, selected codec, the speed of the storage, and the number of CPU cores available. For multi-channel recording on a single machine we therefore recommend the highest specified CPU currently available and a storage device able to read and write at least twice the theoretical data rate required by the specific codec multiplied by the number of channels being recorded.

For example, recording high definition 1080i50 streams in Apple ProRes HQ would require an Apple Mac Pro or Apple Mac mini with the minimum specifications stated below: 

Qualified Apple Mac Models for just:in multi 

  • PCI-Card setups: MacPro 12-core (5,1)
  • Thunderbolt setups: 
    • Mac Pro (6,1) 8- or 12-core
    • Mac mini Quad-Core (6,2)
    • Mac mini (7,1) 1
  • Clients:
    • iMac Quad-Core i7 (13,1 – 13,2, 14,1 – 14,2 and 15,1) recommended.




To identify your Mac model, click on the Apple Menu (upper left of the screen) and select About This Mac while holding the option-key. The menu item turns to System Information…


RAM

At least 8 GB (16-64 GB recommended). 

Operating System 

OS X 10.9.5 / 10.11 or higher. Administrator account required. 

Other

Variable framerate devices like the FaceTime HD Camera are not supported! 

1 Currently the max. amount of recordables channels in HD (with Apple ProRes HQ) on a Mac mini i7 2012 (6,2) is 2. With the dual core Mac mini (7,1) the maximum amount of channels is 1!

Support for legacy hardware like the Xserve (3,1) models and older Mac Pros (3,1, 4,1) has been discontinued.
